About the organization

Educational Institutions

This organization is a nonprofit formed by Dr Maxwell Boakye, Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Louisville. The organization aims to develop neurosurgery, neurological, and spinal care, as well as community health care, in the rural Eastern regions of Ghana. Dr. Boakye was born and spent the first 18 years of his life in Ghana, so this foundation serves to give back and improve healthcare and development for many less fortunate Ghanaians who face numerous health challenges, including neurological, pain, and other diagnoses, and require neurorehabilitation. A second mission is to support chess-based cognitive development and STEM education for disadvantaged children in Ghana. The foundation hopes to provide longitudinal medical evaluation and treatment and healthcare for patients with neurological and spinal diseases, e.g., strokes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, spinal stenosis, and pain. We are helping to develop a general and neuro ICU, as well as improve surgical theatre capabilities, and developing, equipping, and training staff at a community health clinic that was built last year. Many volunteers are physicians, nursing staff, and trainees from the University of Louisville. We are also considering an official partnership with the University of Louisville programs in Global Health for medical students.
